Resources on Blood Donations and Sickle Cell Disease
The Sickle Cell Disease Coalition (SCDC) is committed to spreading awareness about the importance of giving blood to ensure there is sufficient supply for individuals living with sickle cell disease (SCD) for whom transfusions are life-saving and prevent complications. Individuals with SCD have various racial and ethnic backgrounds, with the majority being of African descent. Donor blood is more closely matched from someone of the same ethnic group, so in addition to encouraging all blood donations, we are especially focused on highlighting the need for donors of African descent.
This issue is incredibly critical now given the decline in donations amid the pandemic. The following information, resources and sample messaging were collected from vested stakeholder groups to help spread awareness about the importance of donating blood and how to locate a donation site.
