World Sickle Cell Awareness Day

World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2021:

Knowledge is Power!

Empowering stakeholders with knowledge to #ConquerSCD

In celebration of World Sickle Cell Awareness Day (WSCD) 2021, the Sickle Cell Disease Coalition (SCDC) is empowering stakeholders with knowledge and resources to educate and spread awareness on sickle cell disease (SCD). Resources are organized by the intended stakeholder audience and include various calls to action; all resources were produced by the Coalition. Help spread SCD awareness and empower others in your community by using the sample social media messaging at the end of the page to celebrate the theme and share these resources.

For the person living with SCD:

  • SCD Therapy Fact Sheets
These fact sheets aim to help individuals living with SCD and their caregivers explore available SCD therapies with their health care team; three therapies are included: Crizanlizumab, L-glutamine, and Voxelotor.

For the public:

  • SCD Reading Lists
These lists offer recommended literature in an array of genres that spreads SCD awareness. Books are organized into two lists: one for children and one for young adults (YA) and adults.
  • Blood Donation Resources
These resources educate on the critical need for blood supplies to treat the SCD community, how to make an appointment to donate blood, safety measures taken at donation centers in response to COVID-19, and ways to spread the word.

For the provider:

  • COVID-19 Resources
These resources provide timely information on how COVID-19 is impacting individuals living with SCD and available programs to support providers and the community.

For the global public health advocate:

  • Repository of Global SCD Educational Tools
This repository includes infographics and presentation slides offering vetted information on a wealth of SCD topics. These tools are designed for SCD advocates in low-resource settings to selectively use and tailor for community education, stakeholder engagement, and programming.
